    Re. Nick Xenophon

So far as I can tell, China is setting good examples.

    1) It has saved Uyghurs from terrorism in Xinjiang and invested in Uyghur culture and welfare.

In contrast the US bombed neighboring Afghanistan to bits and left the place in ruins.

    2) China has accepted a request from the Solomon Islands to help maintain law and order.

In contrast the U.S. has responded by threatening military action

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9ivr9bznFY

    3) China is maintaining neutrality with respect to the Ukraine conflict so it can help negotiate a peace deal.

In contrast the US and its allies are supplying weapons to Ukraine which will prolong the conflict

Ukraine Fired Western “Lethal aid” on Civilian Infrastructure In DPR in January 2022.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbFCFPmTF8A

    4) Chinese officials take care to ensure that their statements are accurate.

In contrast US officials are all over the place:

Blinken caught lying — Blinken, Russian economy in shambles…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ynu-RkPUDF0

Dishonest by US generals exposed — Afghanistan: The Graveyard Of Empires

    https://youtu.be/mjtAuvQFps8?t=40
    Key points.
1.Scott Ritter mainly attributes the blame for America’s disastrous 20 year long intervention in Afghanistan on the shoulders of the US generals. Ritter argues that the defeat of the Taliban in 2001 was the catalyst for the generals to trick the US public and Congress into believing they had won the war and were making progress in the long-term, when in reality they had only won a short-term battle.
    2. The reason why the deception lasted so long is because the military who instigated it had a vested economic interest in ensuring that this state of affairs continued. In other words, military careers depended upon the perception of victory.

Of course, China is a foreign country so even if it is setting good examples, we still require our politicians to put the interests of Australia ahead of the interests of China.

Is Nick Xenophon doing that? I hope so. I haven’t seen evidence to suggest otherwise.

Invitation to respond: science and technology sector 2022 election commitments

Over the past few years, Australians have seen anew how crucial science and technology are to our lives – and to the nation’s safety, prosperity and sovereign capability. Without science, we’d have been lost.

Leading into the federal election, Science & Technology Australia – Australia’s peak body for the science and technology sector – is inviting parties and candidates to respond to the STA science and technology sector’s election priorities (listed below).

We invite you to respond to the 10 priorities below with specific commitments in each area, including any details of policy and funding pledges you may have already made.

Please also share your vision for science and technology as key capabilities to secure Australia’s economy, environment, and a healthy, safe and prosperous society.

We’d be grateful if you could provide your response by 9 May 2022. Brief answers (up to 200 words) would be ideal, but feel free to hyperlink to further details.

Survey responses will be shared with the science and technology sector and published on our website. Responses may be picked up by the media.

The science and technology sector urges all parties to pledge to:

    1. Make Australia a global STEM superpower by growing R&D investment to lift Australia into the top ten OECD countries (relative to the size of the economy).

    2. Invest in a $2.4 billion Research Translation Fund to drive income-generating commercialisation of Australian research and create thousands of new jobs.

    3. Craft a comprehensive plan across Government to coordinate R&D strategic investment, policy and roles to seize competitive strategic advantage for Australia.

    4. Embolden discovery research by boosting investment in the major grant agencies to catapult breakthroughs and secure the science workforce with a bridge to the other side of the pandemic.

    5. Tackle the broken system of insecure work tied to competitive research grants especially for Australia’s early career scientists – the future of the profession.

    6. Commit to keep funding the national science agencies in the coming term by at least current levels of investment indexed by CPI.

    7. Develop a comprehensive plan to transition to a net-zero emissions economy and safeguard Australia’s unique biodiversity.

    8. Renew a long-term investment in the nation’s vital research infrastructure through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy.

    9. Craft a plan to tackle a decline in STEM achievement of Australian school students and stop the brain drain of our children out of STEM.

    10. Make a further commitment to programs to boost diversity and inclusion in STEM to ensure the nation draws on the widest possible pool of talent.

Thank you for your kind consideration.

Professor Mark Hutchinson, President and Misha Schubert, CEO, Science & Technology Australia

    Dear Mr Pavlou,

I’m an Autistic person who is organising a campaign against subminimum wage. As you may be aware, disabled people in Australia can be paid as little as $2.54/hr, even though the minimum wage for others is $20.33/hr. As such we have organised an open letter signed by over 1300 people across the country (including 412 Queenslanders), as well as 5 national organisations (including Inclusion Australia and Women with Disabilities Australia, peak organisations for people with intellectual disabilities and disabled women in Australia, respectively), and 12 local businesses and organisations (8 in Queensland), and 10 elected officials. That letter is here: https://forms.gle/FGJX8GUUaH4QzePd6

I’m writing to ask you to sign on as a candidate in support of ending subminimum wage. We will be adding supporting candidates to the letter later this week.

I’m happy to answer any questions you may have.

    Hi there!

We are Project Planet and we are running a Vote One Climate campaign where we break down the climate policies of every single candidate across Australia!

We’re just missing a few pieces of information to help us explain your climate policy to voters.

These are the following questions we are asking every candidate:

    1. Do you have a statement regarding the climate emergency?

    2. Do you have a 2030 emissions reduction target? If so, what is it?

    3. What percentage of the national electricity grid will be generated by renewable energy in 2030? Do you have clear policies to achieve this target?

    4. What is your stance on electric vehicles, incentives and surrounding policies?

    5. What is your stance on new fossil fuel mines (thermal, coal, gas, and oil)?

If you could please respond asap (or by the end of April at the latest) otherwise we will work with the information we have from your website.

Thank you for your time and good luck with your election campaign!

    The Project Planet Team

    Good afternoon Drew,

My name is Ebony McKenna and I am the Co-Founder of Polipedia – a political digital disruptor – polipedia.com.au.

Our aim is to disrupt politics by providing information about politicians without spin or bias.

Polipedia.com.au brings together political information that is already available to the public through Hansard, Wikipedia, the pecuniary interests register, expenses register and donor register. We then bring it all together using AI tech to create a single searchable digital resource.

We will also marry this search resource with social media analytics and media monitoring to create a comprehensive resource of political information that will drive deeper and better political engagement.

We want to include information about every candidate in the upcoming federal election. As you are a candidate for the House of Representative – we ask you to complete the attached online form, so we can ensure that your candidacy is given sufficient exposure and precedence at the up-coming election.

Could you please click on the link below and complete the online form to ensure your profile has sufficient exposure:

    https://forms.gle/JKypfUeP17HkffQNA

Also, could you please with a list of all DPDA candidates in each state and their contact emails, or at least those who are preselected so far.

    Thank you in advance.

If you have any questions or hesitations – please email me.

    Regards,

    Ebony

In response to your Peng Shuai email this morning:

    Hi Drew and team,

Great campaign and love what you’re doing to highlight this issue.

What tremendous energy and ingenuity you can take to such an issue. If only you could use this same energy to stick up for and support those who are being disappeared daily by our governments in Australia. Why not apply this same energy to an issue affecting a sizeable portion of our population – vaccine mandates and the very real discrimination that is happening by our governments, businesses and institutions throughout the country. This is a far more pertinent issue to Australian citizens, not that the actions of the Chinese government are not; but when our own government is slowly morphing into something resembling the regime in Beijing, we should be focusing our energies here. That would see me provide much more support and would be an issue people might make voting decisions on.

    Thanks
